About the School of Computing
Welcome to the School of Computing! The School of Computing has outstanding faculty expertise supporting a wide range of research and instruction in traditional and emerging areas of computer science and engineering.
The school continues to grow at a rapid pace in terms of research funding, publications, and national and international service and recognition. Our rich research environment directly contributes to the high quality of our undergraduate and graduate programs, supporting world-class education at all levels (B.S., M.S., Ph.D.).
The School of Computing resides in the Information Technologies Engineering Building (see the ITE Building on the Virtual Campus Map), providing state-of-the-art research, instructional, and laboratory facilities.
Please browse our web site where you will find detailed information on our academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, research and teaching profiles of our vibrant faculty, and student societies.
Undergraduate Education
The department offers three distinct undergraduate programs:
- The Computer Science and Engineering undergraduate program emphasizes breadth, covering fundamental topics in both computer engineering and computer science.
- The Computer Science undergraduate program emphasizes depth in computer science, covering fundamental topics in the theory, principles, and practices of computing along with additional instruction and experience in a discipline outside of the College of Engineering.
- The Computer Engineering program emphasizes depth in computer engineering focusing on the design and fabrication of computing devices.
The department also offers Minor Programs.
See our Undergraduate Studies page for further information.
Graduate Education
The department offers both the Master of Science (M. S.) and Doctor of Philoshopy (Ph. D.) degrees. See our Graduate Studies page for further information.
Research
The department supports internationally-recognized research in a variety of computing disciplines. See the Research Activities page for further information.
Accreditation
The Computer Science and Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org. The Computer Science and Engineering program is also accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org.
The Computer Science program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org.
Department 30th Anniversary 1986-2016
During the 1960’s, computer science emerged as an important area within the Electrical Engineering Department. The computer science curriculum was formally established in 1972, culminating the efforts of many faculty members led by Dr. Taylor L. Booth, a renowned pioneer in computer science education who is considered to be the founder of our department. In 1977, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) designated UConn’s program as one of the very first accredited programs in the field of Computer Science. In the early 1980’s, the major was renamed Computer Science & Engineering. A separate Computer Science & Engineering Department was established in 1986 due to the growth in the number of computer science & engineering majors, faculty, and the success of the educational and research programs.
The CSE program was the second program in the country to receive dual accreditation from the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) and the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of ABET in 1993.
Two undergraduate programs were added in 1999, a B.S. with a major in Computer Science and a B.S. in Engineering with a major in Computer Engineering. In 2001, the B.S. in Computer Science was accredited by the ABET’s Computer Accreditation Commission (CAC). In the 21st century, the department continued to grow and gain national and international recognition in education and research. For the first time, the size of the faculty exceeded 20, with 10 faculty winning the National Science Foundation Early Career Development (NSF CAREER) Award.
