School of Computing is thrilled to announce that Professors Chuxu Zhang and Dongjin Song have been awarded the prestigious Frontiers of Science Award (FSA) in Computer Science at the 2024 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) for their collaborative work on “Heterogeneous Graph Neural Network”, originally presented at KDD 2019. This award recognizes research of the highest scientific value and originality, and their contribution has made a significant impact in the field of data science. Their collaborative work introduced novel techniques for modeling heterogeneous graphs—networks composed of multiple types of entities and relations—enabling more effective learning from complex, real-world data such as social networks, healthcare systems, and recommendation engines. The work has garnered over 1,400 citations globally, highlighting its significant influence and widespread recognition in the academic and research communities.
The 2024 International Congress of Basic Science, held in July and hosted by the Fields Medal winner Shing-Tung Yau, is one of the most prestigious global platforms for fundamental scientific advancements. Receiving this award highlights the international recognition of Professors Zhang and Song’s pioneering research, and is a testament to the impact that UConn’s School of Computing is making in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
